What I, the Student, Am Doing

  • Determine a broad topic
  • Develop search terms and related topic vocabulary
  • Developing questions Identify resources
  • READ and Annotate
  • Build background knowledge
  • Analyze rhetorical situation (S.O.A.P.S.): consider audience & purpose 

  • Collaborate with others based on topic
  • Narrow your topic or question
  • Create a Bibliography or Annotated Bibliography
  • This would be the “pit” stage

What the Teacher and Librarian Are Doing

  • Instruct students on how to locate sources:
    Print  Databases  Web
  • Instruct students how to analyze a credible source:
    C.R.A.A.P.O. Evaluation tool
  • Teach students how to gather & summarize sources.
  • Teach students how to cite sources in MLA (English) or Chicago Style (Social Studies): OWL Purdue
  • Model all of these processes
  • Provide formative feedback
